North Lincolnshire Green Party Urge Caution Over Corbyn Appointment

The North Lincolnshire Green Party has today welcomed the appointment of new Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, but has warned that any change in the Labour Party will not be as radical as expected by many.

Jeremy Corbyn was elected as the new Labour leader after a groundswell of supporters joined the party to back his campaign. Despite Mr Corbyn receiving the almost universal backing of the Scunthorpe Labour Party, acquiring the party’s constituency nomination, MP Nic Dakin instead supported Yvette Cooper in her unsuccessful bid for leadership

North Lincolnshire Green Party Communications Coordinator Rick Taylor said: “We applaud and welcome Jeremy Corbyn’s appointment as Labour Leader and would be more than willing to work with those members in Labour who want to see radical changes in local and national politics for the common good. However, we fully expect that any attempts to radically change Labour policy will not be welcomed with open arms. Mr Corbyn narrowly made it onto the ballot paper despite a large amount of support from grassroots activists and it is unlikely that he will be fortunate enough to have the backing of many of the more Tory-Lite Labour MPs in the party who have seemingly gone out of their way to insult and discredit him at every opportunity over the course of this leadership campaign. We struggle to see how other MPs, including Nic Dakin, who refused to vote on the recent welfare bill would be willing to back a man whose policies are rooted in social justice.”

“Although we are almost fully in favour of Mr Corbyn’s appointment we do worry about some of his recent comments about restarting coal mining in South Wales using clean carbon capture technology. Not only is this incredibly expensive and a waste of resources it also threatens the clean renewable wind energy sector. A commitment to the on and off shore wind sector would be invaluable for this town and would secure the long term future of the Scunthorpe steel works and its talented work force.”
