Ashby Council Candidate To Take On Cat Crisis

ASHBY RESIDENT, Laura Atkin, is keen to highlight the growing crisis of unwanted cats in the area.

Figures from the RSPCA have shown a rise in the number of unwanted cats in the Ashby area. This is resulting in a number of unwanted cats and kittens being thrown out onto the streets to fend for themselves.

Along with the number of unwanted cats rising, the number of adoptions has dramatically hit an all time low. There are cats and kittens crying out for homes within Ashby and the RSPCA are struggling to accommodate any more. Their kennels and foster homes are literally full to the brim with large waiting lists for cats waiting to come into their care. Where at one time they would be able to help the majority of cats in our area, they now have to prioritise the most urgent cases. The current cat crisis is largely caused by owners not neutering or spaying their cats.

As Green Party Council Candidate for Ashby, Laura is keen to help combat the cat crisis by promoting the neutering of all cats from the age of 6 months. Despite efforts by the RSPCA to promote their subsidised neutering scheme for people claiming benefits, the cat population has continued to spiral out of control. It is greatly recognised across the UK that the best way to control cat population is by neutering and spaying cats at a young age. If Laura is elected as Councillor for Ashby then she will encourage the Council to offer subsidised neutering to all cat owners. She truly believes and supports that neutering is the best option for all cats. It not only has the benefits of preventing unwanted litters but also has major health advantages, stops cats roaming, spraying, improves behaviour and improves the community by ensuring feral cats are not left to find food and shelter themselves.

Laura is keen to hear from local people who want to help put an end to the current cat population crisis. Having recently saved an unwanted kitten from being thrown onto the streets and giving her a forever home it is something that Laura is really passionate about.

About Laura Atkin:

Laura Atkin is the Green Party Council Candidate for Ashby and Coordinator of North Lincolnshire Young Greens. Having lived in Ashby for all of her 23 years, she wants to bring a new, younger perspective to the council and change people’s views on what a councillor should be like. She is standing for council as she is very passionate about the community she lives in and in particular Animal Welfare issues within Ashby. By listening to the views of the local people she believes she will be able to make a difference to the environment we live in. By standing as a Councillor representing the Green Party, Laura wants to give the public an option for real change, a viable alternative party to vote for that will represent and benefit the majority not the selected few. Many of the services our older relatives fought for are being compromised – the free NHS, free education for all and affordable housing. Laura fully supports the Green Party and believes that the people and planet should be put before profit. Our public services need to be kept publicly owned and publicly run. She wants to make a real difference to the lives of the local people and for future generations. Laura is not afraid to stand up and defend what the local community believe in. The cat population crisis is something that Laura is very passionate about. After recently saving an unwanted kitten from being thrown onto the streets and giving her a forever home it is something that is close to Laura’s heart.
