Clive Holder is quite right to warn Martin Vickers and the Tories about triumphalism after the elections in May 2015. (Letter sections, Scunthorpe Telegraph 16th July). Indeed the Tories would do well to remember that 63% of the electorate voted against them at the General Election.
It is odd that in the Greek Referendum the ‘Yes Campaign’ were deemed to have been roundly defeated by getting 39% of the popular vote, but in this country the Tories, with only 37% of public support, think they have a mandate to do what they like.
Of course this is as a result of our grossly undemocratic first past the post electoral system but the Tories need to acknowledge that most of us are against their policies. They do not have the popular support to reverse the limited green measures implemented by previous Governments, or push through fracking permissions and so contribute to climate change rather than help prevent it.
Neither can they expect to be able to ride rough shod over the welfare system and impose more austerity measures which hit the poor and benefit the already well off, without provoking those with more progressive views to take to the streets and protest.
It’s time we stood up for the future of our planet and all the people on it.
