Plans to erect a natural gas power plant in Crosby, Scunthorpe have been strongly opposed by North Lincolnshire Green Party. According to media sources, the proposers of the application plan to have 8 generators powered by natural gas.
North Lincolnshire Green Party Coordinator, Laura Atkin says “In an age where our actions can cause irreversible climate change, we should be ensuring that all fossil fuels remain in the ground in order to protect our environment for future generations. Power plants, such as the proposed application produce large amounts of Carbon Dioxide, which is the most significant greenhouse gas and the greatest contributor to climate change. The burning of natural gas, even with the most modern technology, is a great contributor to air pollution. This in turn will have detrimental effects on the health and wellbeing of people in the surrounding areas.”
North Lincolnshire Green Party has also expressed concerns for the local economy due to the emissions from the power plant, which is in close proximity to a large number of food manufacturing outlets. This application comes at a time when the Government has recently removed all funding to the renewables industry.
North Lincolnshire Green Party have expressed that they wish for the application to be referred to the Planning Committee so that this contentious issue can be debated in full.
