North Lincolnshire Green Party Press Release

For Immediate Release

North Lincolnshire Green Party strongly objects to another Betting Shop opening in Ashby.

Plans to open another betting shop in Ashby, Scunthorpe have been strongly opposed by North Lincolnshire Green Party.  The proposers have applied for planning permission to change the use of 12, Broadway to a betting shop.

North Lincolnshire Green Party is concerned that another betting shop will be very detrimental to the area. Rick Taylor, North Lincolnshire Green Party Press Officer says “There are already several betting shops in Ashby. Two of which are only doors away from this proposed betting shop. Betting shops add nothing to the community and only serve the faceless corporate owners behind them; no money is put back in to the local economy. By granting this application it will drastically change the overall character of the area and damage the diversity of business. We do not see that there is the necessary demand for another betting shop within such a small radius.”

North Lincolnshire Green Party fully respect people’s right to gamble, but state that it is the entire community that will suffer as a whole as it affects those not using the betting shops and also those who cannot resist using them. Laura Atkin, North Lincolnshire Green Party Coordinator states “There is evidence that people in difficult economic circumstances are prone to gambling to counteract their financial difficulties. Such people are vulnerable to a proliferation of betting shops appearing on the High Street and Broadway. We are greatly concerned that another betting shop would add to the level of deprivation in the area, particularly now we are witnessing support services for vulnerable adults close down in rapid succession. The site in question becoming a betting shop sends a signal that we have lost the High Street and Broadway as a managed, mixed, safe and potentially vibrant part of the community.”

You can object to this planning application by visiting North Lincolnshire Councils Planning website and searching for application PA/2015/1088.
